Rubber Boots are made of rubber, natural or synthetic. This water-proof material is known from the Egyptians but for thousand of years it was not considered by the manufacturers. The problem was that the temperature influences the properties of the rubber in a significant manner. It is very soft and tack with hot temperature, while is hard and liable to fracture with cold. And this is not so good to product rubber items.

The solution was found by Charles Goodyear with the process of vulcanization, involving high heat and the addition of sulfur.
Vulcanization tempered this bad behavior of rubber so that it was tough, more easily molded, and durable.
With vulcanization the manufacturers started to produce a lot of items that now we use also today. So, the born of rubber boots, in all the forms that we know as waders, knee high, wellingtons or colored rain rubber boots was possibile thanks to Goodyear.

La gomma è una sostanza impermeabile che si trova in natura. Molto probabilmente furono gli Egiziani i primi a realizzare calzature in legno e gomma. Ma per molto tempo non ci fu molto interesse per la gomma fino a quando Charles Goodyear riscopri' questa pianta in grado di fornire un materiale impermeabile, leggero ed elastico. Ma c'era un grosso scoglio da superare. Le proprieta' della gomma infatti dipendono molto dalla temperatura. Col caldo tende a diventare liquida e appiccicosa mentre col freddo si irrigidisce e diventa fragile. Goodyear trovo' la soluzione grazie al processo di vulcanizzazione che consiste nell'aggiungere alla gomma dello zolfo. Da allora l'utilizzo della gomma nella produzione di articoli ha avuto un'enorme espansione. Tra questi articoli si iniziarono a produrre in modo massiccio gli stivali di gomma.

La gomma naturale inizio' ad essere sostituita da sostanze artificiali come il PVC durante il periodo della seconda guerra mondiale. La gomma naturale comunque risulta essere ancora utilizzata non solo nel campo dei pneumatici, ma anche in quello delle calzature, per produrre stivali di gomma di elevata qualità.
